HOLISTIC has actively contributed to several impactful projects, leading initiatives that enhance environmental sustainability and technological innovation. Our efforts have focused on developing advanced platforms to support energy and environmental policy, as well as creating secure systems to facilitate efficient digital transactions. Throughout these projects, we have emphasised stakeholder engagement and led dissemination, communication, and exploitation activities to ensure comprehensive project success.
Advancements in next-generation energy technologies will drastically transform how the world generates and consumes power. Starting with the decentralisation of the energy system, it is necessary to establish a fair and secure engagement between big data and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. To achieve this, there is a need for more standardisation of big data architectures for smart grids and regulatory frameworks that do not facilitate actual data sharing.
The EU-funded BD4NRG project developed a reference architecture for smart energy to align various architectures together with an interoperable AI-driven big data analytics framework. This enabled cross-stakeholders data-driven services and full interoperability of leading-edge big data technologies with smart grid standards and operational frameworks.
HOLISTIC contributed to the pilot monitoring, as well as dissemination, communication and exploitation activities of the project results.

PARIS REINFORCE was an EU-funded research and innovation project aimed at effectively supporting design of climate policies, in light of these requirements; it started in June 2019 and run until 2022.
In particular, the project aimed to develop a novel, demand-driven, integrated assessment model-oriented framework for effectively supporting the design and analysis of climate policies in the European Union as well as in other major emitters and selected less emitting countries, in respect to the Paris Agreement and associated challenges.
By engaging policymakers and scientists/modellers, PARIS REINFORCE created the open-access and transparent data exchange platform I2AM PARIS, in order to support the effective implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the preparation of future action pledges, the development of 2050 decarbonisation strategies, and the reinforcement of the 2023 Global Stocktake.
Acknowledging the need to employ diverse methodologies and tools in order to address the multiplicity of challenges, the unique approach of PARIS REINFORCE changed the existing scientific paradigm, by introducing innovative integrative processes. In this direction, quantitative systems modelling tools were further coupled with well-established methodological frameworks, in order to improve the robustness of modelling outcomes against different types of uncertainties.
HOLISTIC contributed to the development of the open access and transparent data exchange platform, I2AM PARIS, as well as the dissemination, communication and exploitation of the project results.

ECO SENSE aimed to support municipal enterprises for the effective implementation of the actions to reduce their carbon footprint and adapt to climate change. It focused on the design of the integrated ECO SENSE platform and label, which included four main software and hardware tools to support decisions on: (a) carbon footprint mitigation actions; and (b) actions for the adaptation to climate change of public sector’s enterprises.
Initially, the ECO SENSE Footprint and ECO SENSE Resilience tools were used for calculation and monitoring of the carbon footprint and resilience to climate change respectively. ECO SENSE Forecasting, as a tool for the analysis and forecasting actions to mitigate and get adapted to climate change, supported the implementation monitoring of SECAPs, EEAPs and the overall strategy through an integrated roadmap (ECO SENSE Roadmap). In order to implement the above tools, machine learning methodologies, forecasting models and multi-criteria analysis for decisions making of the evaluation and prioritization of actions were used.
ECO SENSE platform was tested in 15 municipal enterprises as pilot case studies to evaluate its operational and practical results in order to reduce their energy consumption and other resources and strengthen their resilience to climate change which led to the acquisition of ECO SENSE label.
HOLISTIC was a member of the consortium which was awarded the ECO SENSE project, as well as its Project Scientific Leader. Its key contribution was the development of the ECO SENSE platform and labeling. Moreover, HOLISTIC led the dissemination, communication and exploitation activities.

Co‐financed by the European Union and Greek national funds through the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, under the call RESEARCH–CREATE-INNOVATE (project code: Τ2ΕΔΚ-00241).
The strategic policy-making process often includes several “beneficiaries” (e.g. citizens, customers, workers, businesses) and a smaller number of “decision-makers” (managers of public and private organisations, etc.). Developing a strategy is also complicated because of the potentially large number of policy combinations and their impact on the beneficiaries, which, however, provide limited input in the composition of the final policy portfolio.
POLIFOLIO intended to develop an innovative methodology, and the necessary IT open source infrastructure, for the facilitation of the “co-creation” of interventions by all the stakeholders involved, using crowd-sourcing techniques, modelling / simulation of complex systems and open data sources.
The proposed methodology comprised three phases: Initially, the decision makers defined Key Performance Indicators and the “action frameworks” in a graphical modelling environment. Afterwards, the beneficiaries, with the help of the IT system, proposed action combinations and were made aware of their potential effects.
Finally, the decision-makers analysed the multiple action combination provided by the beneficiaries and compose, in a holistic manner, their policy portfolio. The project was based on the synthesis of skills and know how from the academic and private sector, and had a market orientation. This orientation was reflected on the expected results and the implementation methodology. The project included two pilots for the validation of the methodology and the software platform in local government cases in Greece.
HOLISTIC was in charge of the development of the open source infrastructure and led all dissemination, communication and exploitation activities.

The overall vision of the Energy Citizens for Inclusive Decarbonization (ENCLUDE) was to help the EU to fulfill its promise of a just and inclusive decarbonization pathway through sharing and co-creating new knowledge and practices that maximize the number and diversity of citizens who are willing and able to contribute to the energy transition.
Motivated by achieving an equitable and sustainable future and the fulfillment of individual potential, ENCLUDE contributed to the upcoming transformation of energy use by:
- Assembling, aligning and adapting disparate energy citizenship concepts for diverse communities of citizens and for different scales of policy making, lowering the barrier for action.
- Operationalizing the energy citizenship concept at all scales of policy making for decarbonization.
- Catalyzing a chain reaction of decarbonization actions across the EU.
ENCLUDE was dedicated not only to the co-creation of new knowledge with stakeholders about the emergence and consolidation of energy citizenship, but also to the uptake of this knowledge to mobilize action for decarbonization, taking into account the interests and struggles of diverse citizen groups, including communities, who are not usually invited or expected to participate in these civic processes.
ENCLUDE did this by integrating public engagement throughout the project life cycle rather than at the end of project for dissemination and communication purposes only. The process between knowledge production and implementation includes learning feedback loops between research partners, public authorities, civic organizations and citizens.
HOLISTIC led the synthesis, dissemination, communication, and exploitation activities of the project.

EV-CHAIN aimed to support the application of "blockchain" technology during the process of charging electric vehicles. With the development of the new EV-CHAIN technological solution, every transaction carried out by the users at electric vehicle charging points, was practically "processed" automatically and safely allowing for ease of access to all EV charging platforms.
Regardless of who the EV charging provider is, the EV-CHAIN platform, using blockchain technology, is able to break down the cost of charging the vehicle to the individual stakeholders (e.g. electricity provider, network, taxes, provider charger system, etc.) and can transfer the relevant amounts.
The "EV-CHAIN Wallet" mobile application that was developed is a complete product based on the use of "Blockchain" technology, which brought together owners of charging stations and drivers of electric vehicles, actively enabling electromobility development. Chargers’ owners are able to set charging costs ('flat-rate', time-based, kWh-based, etc.) and adjust them at any time. EV-CHAIN Wallet can handle billing and invoicing processes in a transparent and simple way.
Users through the Peer-to-Peer application are able to use for the first time in Greece a network of private charging points as well as public charging stations, unified under one interface that allows users to find charging stations in their area and charge the electric vehicle smoothly and safely through the properties of the “Blockchain” technology.
HOLISTIC was a member of the consortium which was awarded the EV-CHAIN project and actively participated in the technical and scientific works of this project and contributed to the development of the EV-CHAIN architecture and the development of the ML prediction and decision support algorithms. Moreover, HOLISTIC led all dissemination, communication and exploitation activities.

Οne of the key features of the Paris Climate Agreement is the five-yearly Global Stocktake (GST). The purpose of the GST is to review the implementation of the Paris Agreement in order to assess the collective progress towards achieving the purpose of the Agreement and its long-term goals. The outcome of the GST shall inform Parties in updating and enhancing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The NDC ASPECTS project provided inputs to the GST and supported the potential revision of existing NDCs as well as the development of new NDCs for the post-2030 period. The project particularly focused on four sectoral systems that are highly relevant in terms of the greenhouse gas emissions they produce yet have thus far made only limited progress in decarbonization.
To advance these transformations, it required to understand and leverage the Eigenlogic of those systems and take into account specific transformation challenges. These sectors are transport & mobility (land-based transport and international aviation & shipping), emission intensive industries, buildings, and agriculture, forestry & land-use, including their supply by and interaction with the energy conversion sector.
For each of those sectors, the project undertook „Sectoral Conversation“ to co-create evidence-based narratives with sectoral experts and stakeholders drawing on the consortium’s extensive networks. These narratives have been translated into global pathways, informing the Global Stocktake as well as national pathways for strategically selected countries for each of the four sectors.
As an input to the Sectoral Conversations, the project systematically assessed transformation challenges and opportunities (economic, technological, political/institutional, capacity and awareness), including taking into account experiences with the implementation of the first round of NDCs as well as model-based quantitative analyses. Additionally, it identified ways and means to improve international governance to enable and facilitate sectoral transformations.
HOLISTIC led the dissemination, communication and exploitation activities and it was responsible for the development of the visual identity and the website of the project.
