META BUILD

As the EU increases efforts to decarbonise its building stock, a pressing dilemma emerges – how to effectively electrify thermal energy demand while maintaining affordability and sustainability. Current challenges span the entire building life cycle, from manufacturing to operation, necessitating a comprehensive solution. In this context, the EU-funded META BUILD project is proposing a cost-effective, replicable solution for these challenges by developing heat pumps coupled with renewable energy and storage systems. META BUILD will address each challenge by adopting a holistic approach involving stakeholders at different levels. Concretely, the project aims to operationalise the ‘energy efficiency first’ principle, ensuring a sustainable, efficient and affordable pathway to decarbonising the EU building stock.

META BUILD will provide electrified solutions for residential and commercial buildings in Austria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Spain. Six buildings have been chosen as Front Runners, strategically selected in different countries and climate zone to address the building complexity and challenges. The solutions developed will be extended to seven additional buildings, known as Multipliers, in Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Poland, and Spain.
